Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions our optometrists receive about eye exams.
Why are eye exams important?
Eye exams are important for evaluating your visual acuity and the complete health of your eyes. Our skilled and knowledgeable optometrist will examine your eyes from front to back using a variety of advanced diagnostic tools to check for early signs of serious eye problems like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and more. Additionally, routine eye exams may help to identify other health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.
How often should I get an eye exam?
Our optometry team agrees with the findings of The American Optometric Association and recommends that our patients get a comprehensive eye exam annually starting at the age of 3. However, if you are experiencing certain eye conditions, we may recommend more frequent visits. If you notice any unusual eye discomfort, eye pain or changes in vision, please call our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
How long is an eye exam appointment?
Typically, your annual eye exam should take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. This includes your check-in time, pre-testing and time spent with our optometrist. During the examination process, we will complete a number of vision-related tests and detailed eye health checks. If you have a pre-existing condition or additional evaluation is required, we will schedule a follow-up exam for more comprehensive testing. Additional appointments typically take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.
Does insurance cover an eye exam?
Yes, most insurance policies cover the cost of your annual eye exam. However, we do recommend that you call our office ahead of time to verify your coverage. For those patients without insurance coverage, we are happy to offer $79 eye exams. Other forms of payment accepted in our office include cash, check and most major credit cards.
Is my contact lens fitting included as part of my eye exam?
No. If it is found that you are in need of vision correction services during your initial eye exam, we must first determine whether or not you are a good candidate for contact lenses. From there, we will complete additional testing and try out one or more trial lens options to find the perfect fit for your vision and lifestyle needs.
How much do contact lenses cost?
The cost of your contact lenses will depend upon several different factors including the lens material that works best for your eye, any added features and your prescription. Our experienced optometry team is always happy to estimate the cost of your lenses once we have your prescription and a better idea of any additional features you may be interested in.
How much does an eye exam cost?
Typically, the final cost of your eye exam will depend on a number of different factors including the type of insurance coverage you have, the type of eye exam, whether or not you will be purchasing contact lenses or eyeglasses, etc. We will always do our best to ensure that cost is not an obstacle when it comes to getting the eye health and vision care services you need. In addition to offering our affordable $79 eye exams, we happily accept a variety of payment options.
